Abruzzo is one of the few regions in which the tradition of manual labor is all but lost, and holds a great importance in the history of L’Aquila. There are still streets named according to the trades of those who had their houses and their workshops there. Still today, artisans are valuable members of the trade community, and their products are famous throughout the nation. Precious pillow laces in the “Pescocostanzo’s and aquilano” version, Silver and gold filigrees, ceramics by Castelli and San Berardino, cloths. And besides valuable iron, copper and brass manufactured and the more traditional wooden utensils like the “chitarra per i maccheroni”, a tool used in the preparation of a kind of pasta typically of L’Aquila. Even leather becomes fine saddlebags and saddles, famous in all of Europe for their high-quality craftsmanship.
